Peat litter for horses, cattle and chicken coops

Using dried white peat as litter for pets has been done for over 100 years. Particularly in areas where peat is abundant, such as Finland, Russia or the Baltic States, peat litter is used in large amounts for agricultural purposes. In Finland alone, the annual sales volume for litter is around 1.3 million cubic meters. White peat is able to absorb up to 800 liters of liquid per cubic meter. It also has excellent odor-neutralizing capabilities, especially for ammonium nitrogen. Compared with straw, wood fiber or similar materials, sphagnum white peat has the highest absorption rate for ammonium. This has special significance for raising deep litter chickens. Even by just spreading the manure, odor emissions and stench can be confined to a large extent. Another advantage is that the combination of peat and animal dung can be dispersed onto fields without problem for use as a pure organic fertilizer in either liquid or powder form. The industry offers good technical solutions for this. White peat is also available in mini bales or small packages at specialized shops for use as litter for household pets.
