Peat: A sustainable raw material

13.01.2012

Restaurierung

New opportunities for restoring areas where peat was harvested.

In a much publicized presentation to over 200 professionals from the peat industry, Herman Oosterkamp, Kaloveen, showed that it is possible for peatlands to regain their natural state in 5 to 10 years after the areas had been harvested. Restored moors are growing moors with a functioning ecosystem:

  • Establishment of CO2
  • Drainage and filtration
  • Diversity of flora and fauna

An important criterion is the correct choice of peat-forming mosses on residual peatlands with a low pH and controlled water level. In Canada, thousands of hectares have already been successfully restored. The cost of about 700 to 1,000 € per hectare is only a fraction of what was spent in Germany and the Netherlands for rewetting, renaturation, sphagnum farming or paludiculture (swamp). These experiences from Canada have gained particular interest in the Baltic States where harvested areas would also like to be restored.

Did you know that the amount of peat harvested annually throughout the world, approximately 100 million cubic meters, makes up only about 0.1% of the annual growth of peat (about 1 billion cubic meters) on about 4 million square kilometers?

Peat litter for horses, cattle and chicken coops

06.12.2010

Using dried white peat as litter for pets has been done for over 100 years. Particularly in areas where peat is abundant, such as Finland, Russia or the Baltic States, peat litter is used in large amounts for agricultural purposes. In Finland alone, the annual sales volume for litter is around 1.3 million cubic meters. White peat is able to absorb up to 800 liters of liquid per cubic meter. It also has excellent odor-neutralizing capabilities, especially for ammonium nitrogen. Compared with straw, wood fiber or similar materials, sphagnum white peat has the highest absorption rate for ammonium. This has special significance for raising deep litter chickens. Even by just spreading the manure, odor emissions and stench can be confined to a large extent. Another advantage is that the combination of peat and animal dung can be dispersed onto fields without problem for use as a pure organic fertilizer in either liquid or powder form. The industry offers good technical solutions for this. White peat is also available in mini bales or small packages at specialized shops for use as litter for household pets.

New in the Range - Black Peat Products with Humic Peat Basis

05.03.2010

New in the Range - Black Peat Products with Humic Peat BasisWell frozen black peat with the unique effect of "mellowness due to frost" has a high pore volume, a high exchange capacity and stronger pH buffering than white peat. The most important product is substrate for pressed pots used for growing vegetables. Black peat is ideally suitable for this because of its good ability to be processed using machines. Terracult offers tray substrate and different potting substrates with a percentage of black peat. Black/white peat substrates stand out due to the higher water holding capacity and lower water transpiration when compared to white peat. This is just one advantage that our customers located in the climatically warmer regions with high summer temperatures particularly value.

Terracult is the only well-known, independent company that always buys the best raw materials for its partners in the place where the best raw materials are located. As we compare peat sods with gold bars in our visual message, we are saying the following: We are looking for the gold of the season for our partners. And for our partners, this means obtaining consistent quality at the highest standard and thus more reliability in the further production process of substrates.
